Strategy or 'Pragmatically Tactical'

Product strategy, for the most part, has been replaced by what I call Pragmatically Tactical, and that is a positive move for most companies' efforts.

Pragmatically Tactical manifests itself as two sets of rolling plans. The near-term will provide new products in the 0-9 month timespan and the second in 6-18 months. When the first launches, this effort leapfrogs the second and starts again.

Here are some of the benefits of shifting to a pragmatically tactical cycle:

  1. shorter cycles enable your company to quickly adapt to the market changes

  2. success is dependent on execution, which you have significant control over when compared to technology and market changes

  3. more frequent product releases boosts your reputation as an industry leader

Obviously, you still need to invest in a longer term strategy that invests in avant-garde products, services and technologies. These are the projects that span two-to-four of the Pragmatically Tactical cycles and it is these projects that empower you to overtake your competition with the leading-edge products.

Call me to discuss how we can improve the performance of your product commercialization efforts by introducing Pragmatically Tactical cycles to your product development programs.

Best regards,

Doug Ringer
